The position is with the National Wildlife Research Center(NWRC), an organizational unit of the U.S.Department of Agriculture(USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). NWRC is charged with the responsibility of conducting research on a wide variety of wildlife management problems on a national basis. This position is located on the campus of North Dakota State University(NDSU)in Fargo, North Dakota. The incumbent is a Research Wildlife Biologist/Biologist and Project Leader of NWRC research to develop methods and information for managing black birds, starlings, and other avian species in agricultural fields, at feedlots and dairies, and in other nuisance situations.
APHIS is an emergency response agency. This means that all Agency employees may be asked or assigned to participate in rotating temporary duty assignments to support emergency programs at some time during their careers with APHIS. For details click: APHIS Emergency Response

The duties may include, but are not limited to:
As Project Leader, the incumbent provides research leadership and supervision for the Project, including defining, leading, planning, coordinating, conducting, and reporting of investigations dealing with avian-human conflicts.
The Project Leader ensures that employees and students maintain appropriate training for their assigned responsibilities, and resolves conflicts and problems as they arise.
Incumbent develops research objectives, decides job priorities, and develops and manages a budget to ensure work is completed within financial and other administrative constraints.
Incumbent is responsible for executing and reporting on his/her own studies as well as supervising the research of graduate students.
Monitors the status and progress of cooperative agreements with NDSU and other universities as appropriate.
Serves as study director and a major advisor for and sitting on graduate committees of M.Sc. and Ph.D. students conducting research to reduce wildlife-human conflicts.
Maintains active and cooperative relationships with other federal and state agricultural and wildlife agencies; WS Operations, and industry and private organizations.
Works on special assignments as requested by his/her supervisor.

Activities at the research facility and in the field sometimes require work under a wide range of adverse conditions, including extreme temperatures, irregular hours, mud, rain, snow, ice, and potential exposure to insects, spiny plants, and other allergens.
The position may require vigorous physical activity involving lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, and walking in rough terrain under conditions ranging from moderate to extreme.
The incumbent must be able to independently and confidently work in remote locations.
The incumbent must be able to operate a government- owned or leased vehicle.
This position is subject to a Research Grade Evaluation Panel Review to determine eligibility to be promoted to the next grade level. Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. The grade level is limited only by the individual's demonstrated ability to perform research of recognized important to science and technology.

Skill in the collection, analysis, preparation, and presentation (in written and oral formats) of data related to animal biology and ecology, using common computer software, including word processing, spreadsheets, GIS databases, statistical and graphical packages, and population estimation software
Skill in operation and maintenance of field and/or laboratory equipment (traps, animal restraint drugs and devices, GPS units, telemetry equipment) and field vehicles and fleets (automobiles, trucks, boats, snowmobiles, ATVs); procurement and inventory of laboratory and field supplies and equipment
Knowledge of principles and techniques of animal population ecology and behavior, wildlife biology, and wildlife management; methodology for pursuing field and experimental studies
Knowledge of administrative, organizational, supervisory, and budgetary requirements of scientific research programs
Knowledge of and skill in conducting various procedures
Ability to prepare documents, manuscripts for publication, and oral presentations related to research programs and research results

A. Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position; or
B. Combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
0486 RESEARCH WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST BASIC REQUIREMENT:
Degree with major in wildlife biology, zoology, or botany that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in biological science and 15 semester hours in the physical, mathematical, and earth sciences. This course work must have included:
At least 9 semester hours of training applicable to wildlife biology in such subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, principles of population dynamics, or related course work in the field of wildlife biology; and
At least 12 semester hours in zoological subjects such as invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy of the vertebrates, embryology, animal physiology, entomology, herpetology, parasitology, and genetics; and
At least 9 semester hours in the field of botany and related plant science; and
At least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, soils, and/or geology.
IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC REQUIREMENT, FOR THE GS-12 LEVEL:
Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-11 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
Planning and conducting wildlife research studies with emphasis on wildlife damage caused by a variety of wild bird species. The studies conducted would provide tools, information, and solutions to wildlife damage management in order to protect agriculture and human health and safety.
Using information learned in contemporary high-level college classes related to ecology, biology, zoology, statistics, microbiology, and/or modeling to design studies utilizing the scientific method, further the scientific process, and produce new knowledge.
Conducting research studies using scientific principles, analyzing results, and communicating the research through peer-reviewed, scientific publications and presentations.
At this grade level, studies are conducted independently, with very little supervisory oversight. The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of planning, conducting, and reporting on their investigations.
OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in wildlife biology, biology, ecology, zoology, or other closely related field of study. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
